Blue Light and Protective Lenses

It seems as though most of our daily activities involve some sort of electronic device. Whether you are using a computer, cell phone, tablet, or even a smartwatch, our lives seem to be managed by technology to some degree. While these innovations can be extremely helpful in keeping us organized and streamlining our communication, the blue light they emit can have a negative impact on visual health if the proper precautions are not taken.

           Is Blue Light?

Blue light is quite high in intensity along the visible light spectrum. It is just below the UV radiation, which we know can be incredibly harmful. Being so close to UV on the spectrum, many experts believe that blue light can almost have similar harmful effects on the human eye. It may not be as intense as UV itself but the long-term exposure is questionable.

           Computer Use Syndrome

43% of adults work in a job that requires prolonged use of a computer or tablet. Excessive exposure in the long term could increase the risk of losing central vision, which is also known as macular degeneration. Due to the high flicker rate of blue light wavelengths, they create a glare that deteriorates visual contrast, sharpness, and clarity. This is also the reason why most people.

commonly feel eye strain after using these devices for long hours. Eye experts advise limiting the use of blue-light emitting devices, but in today’s society, they can be hard to avoid entirely. For this reason, we recommend using blue-light protective eyewear.

           Blue Light Protective Lenses

In natural occurrences, blue light is everywhere. Fortunately, blue light protective lenses can help to better guard your vision against the dangers of everyday exposure that can be harmful to you. We encourage our patients to consider adding a blue light protective coating to their lenses to help filter some of the blue light that is emitted from electronic devices. In fact, we even recommend these lenses for those who don’t need glasses to see clearly. In those cases, we would simply apply a blue light coating to a lens without a prescription, and these lenses would be worn anytime you would use an electronic device or when working on your computer. This is especially important for children who may be using devices, as this added protection can help prevent vision damage at an early age.

           Other Considerations

In addition to adding an extra layer of protection to your optical lenses, you can also alter the settings on your devices to limit your exposure to blue light. Most modern cell phones have the option to apply a blue light filter to shift the emissions to a warmer red light at night. Dimming your screen brightness can also help prevent eye strain. This is especially important if you are viewing your device at night or in a dark room.

3 Times When Your Child Should Visit the Optometrist

Having your child checked and treated for any vision problems he or she may have is crucial for their health. Visual skills are a vital part of learning, and vision problems can impede your child’s success in school and in life. Visual skills your child needs include eye movement skills, hand/eye coordination, near and distance vision, and focusing skills. Nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism can hinder your child’s development of these skills, and regular optometry exams can help ensure your child develops these important visual skills as they are starting out in life.

           1. Your Child is Just Starting Out in Life

Depending on whether or not they need glasses or contact lenses, they should be receiving an optometry exam every year two years or annually. Children with glasses usually receive annual eye exams, or whatever their eye doctor recommends. Children who do not require vision correction usually receive an eye exam every two years, which is recommended by the American Optometric Association.

           2. Your Child is Showing Vision Problems

Signs that your child has vision problems include if they avoid visual activities (including coloring and puzzles), they sit too close to the TV, they have a short attention span for their age, they are sensitive to light, they struggle with hand/eye coordination (such as when playing with a ball) or if they squint, rub their eyes often, or tilt their head.

As children continue to develop during their school years, eye doctors will be checking for farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism. Activities that can help prevent vision problems in your child can include playing games that include shapes, numbers, or jigsaw puzzles, all of which involve visual problem-solving. Throwing a ball or Frisbee can help improve hand/eye coordination.

           3. Your Child Contracts Pink Eye

Mild redness in your child’s eye, as well as itching or discharge, could be symptoms of pink eye (when the conjunctiva becomes inflamed), a highly contagious virus, and your eye doctor should be contacted to inquire about treatment.

While not all eye redness or itching is necessarily pinkeye (other causes could include seasonal allergies), if your child is experiencing yellow or green eye discharge, a high fever, severe light sensitivity, blurry vision, double vision, light halos (rings of light surrounding objects) in their vision, vision loss, shaking chills, or face pain, immediate treatment by an eye doctor, or possibly at an emergency room if an eye doctor cannot be contacted, may be necessary.

Why a Vision Exam is Good for Your Eyes – and Your Health

Did you know that an eye exam can detect signs of serious health conditions? According to a 2011 study, eye doctors found symptoms of some diseases before other healthcare professionals. This included diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Also, people are more likely to have a regular eye exam than an annual physical. So an eye exam might be the first opportunity to alert people about a health issue.

Why Can Eye Exams Detect a Disease?

By using drops to make your pupils bigger, an eye doctor can look inside your eyes at blood vessels and the optic nerve. This allows the doctor to see symptoms of various health conditions without any pain or discomfort for the patient.

Of course, the main reason you go to an eye doctor is to check your vision. About 11 million Americans who are 12 years and older require vision correction. And, many of them don’t realize their vision is affected.

Exams can also find eye diseases at an early stage when you have a much better chance of keeping your sight with the right treatment. This includes:

            Glaucoma

: a disease that affects the optic nerve

Macular degeneration: usually related to aging when tissue in the eye deteriorates

Diabetic retinopathy: damages blood vessels in the eye and causes blindness

Cataracts: this is the top cause for Americans losing their vision

Some eye diseases don’t have any signs in the early stages, so it’s important to get a complete dilated eye exam with an optometrist or ophthalmologist

Who Should Get an Eye Exam?

Even though older people typically have more vision problems, children should also get an eye exam starting around three years of age. The number one reason for children losing vision is amblyopia, also known as lazy eye – it affects 2-3 of every 100 children. With amblyopia, the eyes and brain don’t work together correctly.

Those with diabetes should have an eye exam once a year. Diabetic retinopathy can cause blindness, but finding it early can stop or slow down vision loss in 90% of those with diabetes. Those who are at risk for glaucoma need to have their eyes checked at least once every two years.

If others in your family have had an eye disease, you may be at higher risk for that condition. So it’s a good idea to know your family’s health issues.

Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration is the leading cause of vision loss in adults over the age of 50. It is considered an incurable eye disease. It can affect your ability to read, drive, recognize faces, and see fine details whether up close or far away. Macular Degeneration is caused by the deterioration of the macula, a part of the retina that helps to focus central vision in the eye. As mentioned above, it is an eye disease that leads to the loss of central vision.

There are two types of basic Macular Degeneration:

            Dry Macular Degeneration –

This form is quite common and accounts for about 80% of those who suffer from Macular Degeneration. This type often occurs as the macula thins over time as you age, causing a slow loss of central vision.

            Wet Macular Degeneration –

This form is less common but more severe as vision loss occurs rapidly due to the development of abnormal blood vessels within the retina.

Most patients do not experience vision loss early on as it occurs slowly and is painless. For this reason, it is extremely important to have annual comprehensive exams as your optometrist may be able to detect signs early on. Some symptoms of macular degeneration include:

A gradual loss of ability to see clearly

The shape of objects appear distorted

Straight lines look wavy or crooked

            Loss of color vision

Dark or empty areas of vision

IT is important to note that vision loss due to Macular Degeneration is permanent and cannot be reversed.

There is no current treatment for Dry Macular Degeneration. However, many people claim to benefit from a combination of lifestyle changes such as diet, exercise, and consuming multivitamins to slow vision loss.

Wet Macular Degeneration can be treated if detected early. The most common form of treatment is using anti-VEGF drugs that can reduce the number of blood vessels within your retina. Laser surgery can also be used to reduce blood vessels.

Keeping Your Eye Health in Mind When Choosing Your Halloween Costume

Halloween masks, if not worn properly, can be a safety hazard when not worn properly by blocking your vision. If they have poorly fitted material, something may get caught in your eyes and put you at risk of an injury. They can also restrict peripheral vision leading to tripping and falls on stairs or curbs. Masks or costumes that cover one eye may lead to loss of depth perception and may also increase the risk of falls or injuries. Avoid oversized pieces that do not properly fit on you or your little one’s head to prevent obstructing your vision when moving about. Secure your headpieces, scarves, or hats, so they do not slip over your or your child’s eyes. Some costumes also have dangerous props like spears or wands that might injure or jab the eyes leading to a medical emergency.

Secure your headpieces, scarves, or hats, so they do not slip over your or your child’s eyes. Some costumes also have dangerous props like spears or wands that might injure or jab the eyes leading to a medical emergency. Stay clear from pointy, sharp props, and go for safer alternatives. When you buy your mask, scrub it with rubbing alcohol to get rid of germs and bacteria that might be present from being touched by other shoppers. Do not drive when wearing masks. You can also avoid masks altogether and use face paint or makeup as a safer alternative.

Purchasing costume contact lenses that are not prescribed could compromise the safety and health of your eyes, putting you at risk of infections, pink eye, and other eye problems. There are two types of contact lenses, the FDA-approved and those not approved by the FDA, such as novelty lenses. The lenses are similar in appearance, but the novelty contact lenses are illegal, poorly made, and may contain bacteria that may cause a nasty eye infection. Novelty lenses may cause vision changes and, in extreme cases, vision loss if you do not get immediate medical assistance. They also lack airflow, fit poorly, and can cause irritation from the lens material leading to additional eye problems and injuries. You may have an eye infection if you are experiencing the following signs:

If you have preexisting allergies or dry eye can cause irritation and eye pain and increase the risk of other eye complications. To ensure your eye safety, if you are interested in costume contact lenses, keep in mind the following:

Have your eyes examined by a professional eye care specialist, even if your eyes are in good condition, to obtain a costume contact lens prescription. This ensures you have properly fitting lenses that won’t scratch your eyes. Contact lenses can come with their challenges, like cornea damage. You may not have any issues at the moment, but the lenses might harm your eyes. Regular eye check-ups and prescription lenses will greatly reduce the chances of undetected problems you might be unaware of.

Buy your costume contact lenses from a trusted company or retailer that requires you to have a prescription. The lenses should include accurate measurement, brand name, and expiration date. The lenses should be sealed in sterile packaging.

Avoid wearing costume lenses overnight and follow your optometrist’s instructions on cleaning and disinfection.

Always wash your hands before handling your lenses to reduce infections, eye trauma, or other complications

Start with your costume lenses first before applying Halloween makeup

In case of irritation, remove your lenses and contact your optometrist immediately if your eyes are inflamed, painful, or you have signs of infection

Before removing your Halloween makeup, take out your lenses first

Never use tap water to clean your contact lenses. Only use contact solution

Do not share your lenses with anyone to avoid the risk of infections

Be careful with the makeup you use near your eye area since it can cause eye problems. Avoid metallic pigments, color additives, parabens, and fragrances since they may cause eye irritation. A patch test on your wrist a day before applying your Halloween makeup can help see how your skin will react. Here are more tips on selecting and using eye makeup:

Avoid glitter eye makeup or flaky products, and choose hypo-allergenic products around the eye area. The makeup at the Halloween stores is low in quality and can cause irritation, rashes, corneal scratches, infections, and allergic reactions. Never use craft glitter since it contains glass or metal particles that are extremely harmful to the eyes.

It would be best to avoid applying cosmetic products inside your eyelash line to avoid drying and irritating the eye surface.

Don’t sleep without removing makeup and thoroughly cleanse your face

Never share makeup with anyone to avoid cross-contamination and the risk of infection

Get your eyelash extensions done by a professional. Avoid the ones sold at Halloween stores since they are low quality and can cause watery eyes, irritation, and infections.

There are so many potential eye hazards and challenges during Halloween. As you have fun, don’t forget to prioritize your eye health by choosing eye-friendly costumes and makeup. Eye problems caused by the wrong Halloween costume choice are unsightly and costly to treat. Following the tips mentioned above will allow you to have fun and create pleasant memories for yourself and your family. If you are facing any challenges with your vision, seek immediate medical assistance as soon as possible to avoid further complications. For more information please

The Importance of Sunglasses as Eye Protection

Sunglasses are not only a fashion statement but can also protect your eyes from the sun’s harmful rays. They can offer all-year-round protection since they can be worn even during winter since the sun can still shine brightly and harm your eyes. Finding a comfortable pair that suits your lifestyle needs and protects you from UV rays simultaneously is essential. Ensure the ones you choose have UV protection information printed on the hang tag.

come in various shapes and styles, including different types of sun lenses, such as mirrored, polarized, and tinted. Sunglasses should have the following features:

           Why Wear Sunglasses

One wears sunglasses for protection because they cover the eyes, reduce strain, and are a stylish accessory. Sunglasses also reduce the glare of the sun’s bright light, reducing your risk of eye conditions such as age-related macular degeneration or cataracts. If you are constantly exposed to UVA and UVB rays, it can put the health of your eyes at risk of eye diseases.

           Importance of Sunglasses

Sunglasses have various health benefits such as:

           Ultraviolet (UV) Light Protection

The most crucial benefit of sunglasses is protecting your eyes from ultraviolet (UV) light. UV light has harmful effects on the eyelids, lenses, and cornea. Exposure to lots of unfiltered sunlight may cause blindness and cancer. Children are more vulnerable than adults. Sunglasses need to be worn all year round. Reflective light is also not good such as the one from the water and snow, which causes a condition known as snow blindness. Glares from the reflected sun may also burn the cornea (corneal flash burn).

To protect yourself from glare, polarized lenses can come in handy to block out horizontal light reflected off flat surfaces. Tinted lenses may also help, especially those with a dark tint at the top that gets lighter towards the bottom portion of the lens. They also protect the eyes from UV light.

Long-term exposure to UV rays increases the risk of contracting cataracts and can worsen glaucoma.

Sunglasses Can Protect Your Eyes from Debris

Exposure to dust, wind, pollutants, and sand can lead to pain, irritation, discomfort, and redness in your eyes. The elements can also scratch your cornea and even cause permanent eye damage. Wearing sunglasses acts as a shield to protect your eyes from these elements.

           Protection of The Retina

Over time, exposure to UV rays may damage the retina, causing a condition known as macular degeneration. This condition has no cure, and wearing sunglasses helps reduce the chances of developing it.

Sunglasses Can Protect Your Dry Eye

A dry eye can be very painful and uncomfortable, especially when you are outdoors and it is windy. The wind dries your eyes, resulting in redness, itchiness, and irritation. Sunglasses protect your eyes from the wind, keeping your eyes moist.

           Sunglasses Help Prevent Eyelid Cancer

Sunglasses protect against eyelid cancer which may occur as a result of exposure to UV rays. Sunscreen products, when used on the sensitive skin of the eyelids, can cause irritation. To avoid this, sunglasses are a better option for protecting your eyes against eyelid cancer.

           Promotion of Eye Recovery

After cataract surgery and procedures like LASIK, sunglasses can act as a protective cover or shield during recovery. Debris and sunlight can interrupt the healing process and cause pain and discomfort.

Wearing sunglasses can help promote a quick, worry-free recovery, especially when you need to go outdoors.

           Migraine and Headache Prevention

If you regularly get migraines or severe headaches, the bright light from the sun may trigger them. Sunglasses keep your eyes comfortable when you are up and down performing outdoor activities. They block or soak up the sun’s rays and help avoid pain and discomfort caused by the bright light.

           Green Beans

Green beans contain carotenoids, which are pigments made up of lutein and zeaxanthin. The human eye contains heavy concentrations of lutein and zeaxanthin. That green bean casserole that you serve at every Thanksgiving meal actually helps to reduce the chances of developing macular degeneration and cataracts. Scientists have recently discovered a third carotenoid called meso-zeaxanthin, which is only produced in the retina. Consuming green beans with zeaxanthin and similar foods, such as asparagus and Brussels sprouts, helps your eyes to produce meso-zeaxanthin.

It is clear to see that many of the staples that families already serve at Thanksgiving promote good eye health.

Unchecked myopia can lead to several vision-threatening complications, including retinal detachment,

           glaucoma

, and myopic maculopathy. Additionally, higher degrees of myopia are associated with an increased risk of vision loss and other ocular health issues later in life. By implementing proactive myopia management strategies, individuals can reduce the likelihood of these complications and maintain clearer vision throughout their lives.

           Effective Myopia Management Strategies:

           Orthokeratology (Ortho-K):

Ortho-K involves wearing specially designed rigid contact lenses overnight to reshape the cornea and temporarily correct myopia. This non-invasive approach can slow the progression of myopia in children and adolescents while providing clear vision during the day without the need for glasses or contacts.

           Soft Multifocal Contact Lenses:

Soft multifocal contact lenses are designed with different zones to correct both distance and near vision. Studies have shown that wearing multifocal contact lenses can slow the progression of myopia in children by controlling the elongation of the eyeball.

           Atropine Eye Drops:

Low-dose atropine eye drops have emerged as a promising treatment for myopia control. By dilating the pupil and temporarily relaxing the focusing muscles of the eye, atropine can slow the progression of myopia and reduce the risk of associated complications.

           Lifestyle Modifications:

Encouraging outdoor activities and limiting screen time and near work can help reduce the progression of myopia in children. Spending time outdoors exposes the eyes to natural sunlight, which has been shown to have a protective effect against myopia development.

           Regular Eye Exams:

Routine eye exams are essential for monitoring changes in vision and assessing the effectiveness of myopia management strategies. An eye care professional can recommend personalized treatment options based on individual needs and lifestyle factors.

In today’s fast-paced world, vision correction plays a crucial role in our daily lives. While eyeglasses have long been the traditional solution, contact lenses offer a modern and versatile alternative. We understand the importance of clear vision and offer a wide range of contact lens options to suit your lifestyle and needs. In this blog post, we’ll explore five compelling reasons why you should consider making the switch to contact lenses.

           Improved Aesthetics:

While eyeglasses can be a fashion statement for some, others may feel self-conscious about their appearance when wearing them. Contact lenses offer a discreet and subtle way to correct your vision without altering your natural appearance. Whether you have a special event coming up or simply want to change up your look, contact lenses allow you to showcase your unique style with confidence. We offer a variety of contact lens options, including colored lenses, to help you achieve the aesthetic you desire.

           Unrestricted Peripheral Vision:

Unlike glasses, which have frames that can limit your peripheral vision, contact lenses provide wearers with a full range of sight. This unrestricted peripheral vision is particularly beneficial for activities such as driving, cycling, or participating in sports, where awareness of your surroundings is essential for safety. With precision-engineered contact lenses, you can enjoy clear, uninterrupted vision from every angle, giving you the confidence to tackle any task with ease.

Contact lenses offer greater flexibility in correcting a wide range of vision problems, including nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia. Unlike glasses, which may have limitations in addressing certain refractive errors, contact lenses can be custom-tailored to your specific prescription requirements, providing optimal clarity and visual acuity.
Seeing Clearly: Exploring the Benefits of Orthokeratology

When there are problems with your teeth’s position or alignment, braces are provided to improve a person’s bite and dental health. Why should your eyes be different? Though glasses and prescription contact lenses can help manage your vision and help you to see, isn’t there anything that can correct your vision, so you don’t have to worry about glasses or contacts? Actually, there is, and it’s called orthokeratology!

           What is Orthokeratology?

or Ortho-K, is a non-surgical procedure that involves the use of specially designed gas-permeable rigid contact lenses to reshape the cornea and improve the patient’s vision. The lenses are typically worn at night allowing the patient to awaken with sharp, clear, and natural vision that eliminates the need for glasses or prescription contact lenses.

Ortho-K lenses have proven effective in correcting near-sightedness, far-sightedness, astigmatism, and blurred near vision. It is also a great alternative for those who do not wish to or cannot undergo vision correction surgery.

           How does it work?

In the initial visit, your doctor will test your eyes to determine if they are healthy, examine your retina, and retake your prescription. If you are a good candidate for Ortho-K lenses, your cornea’s surface will be mapped and measured so that your lenses can be specifically designed for you and your visual goals.

On the day you get your lenses, you will be instructed on how to insert, remove, and care for your lenses. Follow-up appointments will be scheduled, including one for the following day so that your doctor can evaluate your fit and vision after the first night of use.

As mentioned above, Ortho-K lenses are uniquely designed to the shape of the patient’s cornea and the desired change in prescription to allow for reshaping. The back surface of the lens is designed to create a certain shape and level of thickness of the tear layer between the lens and cornea. The cornea is a clear, dome-shaped window in front of your eye that focuses light onto the retina and is responsible for most of the eye’s ability to focus. Overnight, the lenses mold the eye by flattening the cornea into the desired shape, refocusing light on your retina for visual correction.

It is recommended that patients use their Ortho-K lenses nightly to maintain their progress and to achieve vision correction. After several months, patients may be able to vary their wearing time depending on the flexibility of their cornea.

Throughout the first few weeks, your doctor will monitor your eye health and the effectiveness of treatment. Typically, patients require at least 3 modified lenses before they reach their desired level of vision correction.

Patients with milder prescriptions often experience significant improvements after several days, but most patients require several weeks before achieving maximum vision correction. Typically, one night of wearing the lenses can have effects that last 2 full days, but it is recommended that patients wear the Ortho-K lenses as instructed by their doctor.

It is important to note that the corneal reshaping effect from Ortho-K lenses is temporary, meaning that should you discontinue using your lenses, your vision will gradually revert to how it was before treatment began. However, if worn consistently, patients can maintain improvements in their vision.

As stated previously, patients will need a series of Ortho-K lenses before reaching the desired prescription.

Until your eyes are fully corrected, you may notice blurred vision, glares, or halos around lights. You may need to wear glasses with a lesser prescription than what you had before treatment. At first, the lenses may feel uncomfortable, but you should not feel them once you fall asleep, as you get further along in your treatment you will notice your lenses less and less.

           Is orthokeratology safe?

Ortho-K lenses do increase a patient’s risk of developing eye infections. This risk is especially concerning with children and young adults who may not follow cleansing and care instructions properly. Eye infections can have serious consequences that may result in lifelong vision impairments.

It is a painless procedure, though patients may notice discomfort with the lenses at first.

Orthokeratology is a great option for children who wish to be glasses or contact-free, though it should be noted that a child’s vision will continue to change into their 20s. Even still, Ortho-K lenses can help to manage and correct vision problems. If your child enjoys sports, Ortho-K lenses can enable your child to play without wearing corrective sports eyewear, which is another added benefit.

9 Early Warning Signs of Glaucoma You Shouldn’t Ignore

Glaucoma is a primary cause of permanent blindness. There are certainly several reasons you haven’t heard much about it: either you already have it or are unaware of its early symptoms. However, this does not imply you should be unaware of the warning indications. Time is on your side if you get familiar with glaucoma’s early warning signals.

Here are 9 Early Warning Signs of Glaucoma You Shouldn’t Ignore

While vision loss is frequently the initial indicator of glaucoma, other symptoms might arise prior to that. These include the following:

Tunnel vision in one or both eyes

While you lose the ability to perceive objects to your sides, even when you are facing straight ahead, this is referred to as peripheral vision loss (PVL)

            Severe eye and/or head pain

Glaucoma-related headaches are most frequently felt around the eyes and forehead. Angle-closure glaucoma is the most common type of glaucoma that produces headaches and eye pain. Angle-closure glaucoma, sometimes called acute angle-closure glaucoma, is caused by the closing of the iridocorneal angle.

            Nausea and vomiting

Acute glaucoma symptoms include ocular discomfort, impaired vision, and epiphora. Headache, nausea, and abdominal discomfort are all associated systemic symptoms.

            Sudden onset of visual disturbances

The most often reported symptoms by patients with early or moderate glaucoma were a desire for more light, blurred vision, and experiencing glare.

            Excess tearing

Many glaucoma sufferers also suffer from dry eyes. Frequently, people suffer dry eye symptoms but are unaware that they have the illness. This is especially true for persons with glaucoma and dry eye, who frequently experience severe tearing.

            Redness in the eye(s)

Occasionally, fluid accumulates in the front portion of the eye, placing pressure on the eye and potentially damaging the optic nerve.

Halos around lights (seeing colored rings around lights at night)

Some patients will be unable to stare at the light in order to notice the halo, which is another symptom that their glaucoma has progressed beyond the halo stage. The easiest technique to check for this glaucoma indicator is to just stare at a light.

Blurry vision and/or eye discomfort when exposed to light

Vision difficulties, including decreased contrast sensitivity, glare sensitivity, and light sensitivity. Miotics, a type of glaucoma drugs that constrict the pupil in order to enhance fluid flow, can also cause glare difficulties.

            Frequent changes in eyeglass prescription

A quick change in prescription is not normal in the majority of cases. However, if you neglect your annual eye exam, you may feel as if you are experiencing a rapid change. Occasionally, abrupt changes are caused by an eye issue. Many eye illnesses can be difficult to diagnose without a full eye exam.

           Glaucoma

is one of the major causes of blindness, thus detecting it early will help prevent more catastrophic complications. If you’re concerned that you may be having symptoms, call our office immediately to schedule an appointment with our doctor. There is treatment available, but it is only effective if the disease is detected early. Unlike many other diseases, glaucoma cannot be effectively treated once it has progressed to an advanced stage, making early detection critical for people at risk of developing this potentially debilitating condition.
Pediatric Eye Care and Contact Lenses

With so much going on in your children’s lives, it can be difficult to keep up. However, it’s important to make sure they can see the world in front of them as clearly as possible. Did you know that children should have their first eye exam around the age of six months? If the first exam shows their eyes are healthy, you won’t need to follow up with another appointment until the ages of 2 and 3 years. Although many schools offer annual screenings, they are not complete visual exams and the results can be inaccurate.

How do I know if my child is experiencing vision problems?

We encourage you to pay close attention if your child experiences any of these five symptoms as they can be related to vision problems for children:

           1. Rubbing of the eyes
2. Excessive blinking
3. Frequent squinting
4. Regular headaches
5. Shutting one eye to focus.

Even if eye problems do not run in the family and your child hasn’t displayed any of the symptoms above, he or she should visit the optometrist every year after the age of 3 to ensure the eyes are in good health. We can address any questions you have regarding your child’s first visit to the eye doctor before the appointment so he or she will know exactly what to expect. We will do everything we can to ensure that your child has a comfortable, enjoyable visit to our office.

There are a number of reasons why children might not be crazy about wearing glasses. Whether they participate in contact sports, don’t like the appearance of glasses, or don’t like the way glasses feel, you may find that your child is interested in alternative options for prescription eyewear.

While we typically encourage children under the age of 12 or 13 to wear glasses as opposed to contact lenses, as there is a great deal of responsibility that comes with wearing and caring for contact lenses. However, contact lenses can be a safe and effective option for those children with the maturity to take extra care with contact lens handling, storage, and cleaning. If your

There are so many types of contacts that the decision can be quite confusing if you are trying to do it alone. During your exam, we will help you decide which types of contacts would be best for your child depending on his or her specific needs, prescription, and level of responsibility. Here are some of the most common contact lenses that we may recommend:

Disposable-wear lenses – These lenses are made to be thrown away after you wear them for a certain period of time. There are some made to be replaced daily, while others are made to last up to two weeks, if not longer. Wearing disposable lenses is better for the overall health and comfort for your eyes. There are substances in your tears (like protein, calcium, and more) that build up on your lenses, which can get quite uncomfortable. These lenses are a safer option for children as they are less likely to cause an infection due to their limited period of use.

Extended-wear lenses – These are disposable lenses that can be worn for a longer period of time. You can even wear them when you sleep! They can last up to two weeks or even longer depending how often you wear them.

Daily-wear lenses – These are disposable lenses made to be changed daily. They can be quite convenient since you won’t have to worry about cleaning them. They are good to wear when you play sports since they are affordable enough to throw away after a game.

Convergence Insufficiency

Convergence Insufficiency is a very common visual issue that is frequently misdiagnosed as lazy eye, is difficult to notice by the observer, and is not recognized by the normal 20/20 eye test. Convergence Insufficiency affects approximately five out of every hundred children and adults.

           How is it diagnosed?

When your doctor suspects that you have convergence insufficiency, he or she will do a comprehensive eye examination.

The tests will almost certainly contain the following:

Convergence

point is approaching. Your physician instructs you to close one eye and focus on an object. The object is then moved closer to your nose until you notice the double vision. The distance to that location is determined, as well as the time required for the double vision to vanish.

Cover examination. This exercise assesses your eyes’ ability to cooperate cooperatively. Your doctor instructs you to focus both eyes on an object without moving your head. When you follow an object, he or she covers each eye and ensures that each eye moves appropriately and in rhythm with the other.

Phoria examination. This test measures your eyes’ ability to cooperate when they are not focused on something close up (near point). Your doctor will insert a prism in front of one of your eyes and adjust it so that you see two pictures instead of one. Then he or she repositions the prism so that you only see one image (the point at which your eyes converge).

If the doctor discovers an issue with these tests, he or she may recommend you to an eye care practitioner who specializes in kid vision disorders (pediatric optometrist).

           What are the treatment options?

The first step for treating convergence insufficiency is to have your doctor prescribe a home-based vision therapy program.

These programs usually include daily exercises that you’ll perform at home and office visits to check the progress of your treatment.

Vision therapy is a type of physical therapy for your eyes and brain. It’s designed to improve your ability to focus on objects and maintain eye alignment when performing close work, like reading or working on a computer.

During each session, your doctor will ask you to perform certain eye exercises using special prisms, lenses, and other tools.

Some of the tools used in vision therapy include:

Prisms or lenses (to train the eyes to align properly)

Projectors (to project images onto a wall while wearing the prisms or lenses)

Age, hormonal changes, certain medical conditions, medications, environmental factors, and prolonged screen time are just a few of the triggers. Common symptoms include stinging or burning sensations, redness, sensitivity to light, blurred vision, and a gritty feeling in the eyes.

Double Vision

Double vision, also known as “seeing double” or the medical term diplopia is the perception of two images of a single object. This occurs when two non-matching images are sent to the part of the brain that processes visual input. Over time, the brain eventually begins to compensate for this misinformation by suppressing one signal so that only a single image is perceived.

You can probably understand that double vision can affect reading ability, balance, and movement, but you might not have heard much more about double vision. Check out these fast facts about double vision:

Double vision can affect one eye only or both eyes.

Double vision experienced in one eye is referred to as monocular double vision and double vision experienced in both eyes is referred to as binocular double vision.

Monocular double vision is less common than binocular double vision.

Monocular double vision is often the result of one of the following conditions: astigmatism, dry eye, keratoconus, cataracts, or retinal abnormalities such as macular degeneration.

Double vision can be a side effect of an underlying condition.

Some examples include thyroid dysfunction, stroke or transient ischemic attack (TIA), aneurysm, convergence insufficiency, diabetes, myasthenia gravis, multiple sclerosis, and brain tumors or cancers. Additionally, injuries such as those that may cause a black eye or head injury can cause double vision.

Childhood vision habits or issues such as a squint or eye turn can sometimes recur and cause double vision.

A common cause of binocular double vision is strabismus, which occurs when the eyes are not properly aligned.

It is possible to experience temporary double vision.

Alcohol, recreational drugs, and some medications for epilepsy can cause this to happen. Additionally, head injuries and eye strain can sometimes cause temporary double vision, but single vision should be restored fairly quickly. If you experience prolonged double vision under these circumstances, contact your doctor immediately.

While these fast facts can sound a little daunting, you can take comfort in knowing that we are well-prepared to treat patients experiencing double vision. Treatments can include vision exercises, corrective lenses, and when necessary, surgery.

Most courses of treatment will be prescribed based on the cause and type of double vision being experienced. While most cases of binocular double vision can be treated with non-surgical options, some cases of monocular double vision such as that caused by astigmatism or cataracts might need to be treated with laser surgery. We will do everything we can to achieve success with more conservative treatment options before recommending surgery.

If you or a loved one is experiencing prolonged double vision in one or both eyes, we hope that you will consider coming in for an examination so that we can help you find relief and help you see clearly again.
Thanksgiving Foods That Promote Eye Health

Thanksgiving is a great time to share a traditional meal with family and to give thanks. This is a time where most people are probably not thinking about their eye health. That being said, many of the foods served in a traditional Thanksgiving feast actually promote good eye health. These staples are rich in nutrients that contribute to healthy arteries, which in turn supply the eyes with oxygen and other needed resources. You might want to think about incorporating some of the following Thanksgiving foods to your diet year-round for the sake of your eyes.

           Sweet Potatoes

Beta-carotene is the pigment that helps to give sweet potato its coloration. It also helps promote night vision and better eye health. A one-cup serving of sweet potato provides twice the amount of beta-carotene that the average person consumes every day. Sweet potato is also an antioxidant, which helps to fight off infection. Just be sure that you don’t add too many marshmallows to your serving.

           Pumpkin

A slice of pumpkin pie is good for your eyesight as well. A serving of mashed pumpkin provides 200 percent of the recommended daily intake of vitamin A, which aids in low-light vision. Like sweet potatoes, pumpkins are loaded with beta-carotene. The body converts beta-carotene into a form of vitamin A that provides protection for the health of your eyes.

           Cranberry Sauce

Most families will include cranberry sauce during the Thanksgiving meal, but then they never consume it for the rest of the year. That’s unfortunate because cranberries are a “superfood” packed with vitamins and nutrients for overall health. Cranberry contains more antioxidants and vitamin C than almost all other fruits and vegetables. Consider adding cranberry to your diet all year long for the health benefits it provides.

           Omega-3 Fats

           Omega-3 fats are a “

           good

” fat that countless studies have proven to be beneficial. For example, researchers at Harvard found that women who eat fish once a week, which is loaded with Omega-3 fats, were 42 percent less likely to develop age-related macular degeneration than women who only eat fish once per month. You don’t have to serve fish at Thanksgiving to get the benefit of Omega-3, however, because nuts and pumpkin seeds are another great source. Serve low-salt nuts and pumpkin seeds as a pre-meal snack for a boost to your eye health.
